Step 1: Prepare the Work Area
Clear Obstacles: Move furniture, potted plants, and other items away from the fence line.
Lay Down Tarp: Spread a tarp to catch debris as you work.
Step 2: Remove Attachments
Gates: Unscrew hinges and lift gates off posts. Store hardware for potential reuse.
Decorations: Remove planters, signs, etc. Handle carefully if intending to keep them.
Latches/Hardware: Remove additional hardware attached to the fence.
Step 3: Dismantle the Fence
Start at One End: Choose an end and work systematically.
Pry Boards Loose: Insert the crowbar between boards and support posts. Use leverage to pry boards free.
Hammer Assist: Gently tap the crowbar with a hammer to ease removal if needed.
Remove Nails: Use the claw of your hammer to pull out nails from the boards.
Stack Neatly: Stack removed boards for easier disposal. Handle with care, as old wood may splinter.
Step 4: Remove the Posts
Wood Posts:
Ground Level Cut: For tall posts, use a circular saw to cut them close to the ground.
Dig and Lever: Dig around posts to loosen the soil. Use the pry bar for leverage to pull them out.
Concrete Posts:
Jackhammer: May be necessary to break up concrete.
Leverage Alternative: Try soaking the ground around the post thoroughly as the softened earth may allow for easier removal.
Step 5: Clean Up and Dispose
Collect Debris: Gather all debris, nails, screws, etc., onto the tarp.
Final Sweep: Check the ground for sharp objects to prevent injuries.
Secure Materials: Bundle materials for transport using rope or twine.
Check for Utilities: Contact utility companies before digging around fence posts.
Wear Safety Gear: Protect your eyes, hands, and feet.
Handle with Care: Old wood may have splinters and protruding nails.
